Randy Shafer was the Junior Livestock Auction Chairman for many years. He loved raising money for the 4-11 and FFA youth of Calhoun County. Randy lost his battle with cancer in January of 2010. Even at this time he wanted the community to donate to the Junior Livestock Committee to help better the show and auction. It was this action that motivated the family to form Randy Shafer's Warriors. At first the family was donating money to use at the auction,, then in 2012 we started our own fundraising event `Night Out on the Town'. This event is now one of the local premiere events in Calhoun County. Randy Shafer's Warriors donates money to youth livestock auctions in nine surrounding counties. Due to hurricane Harvey damaging the Bauer Community Center, there is not another facility large enough for our annual fundraiser. Randy Shafer's Warriors would like to ask Commissioner's Court for permission to use the county pavilion for this annual event. Thank you for your consideration, Jason W. I was invited before the storm to talk about some of the exciting possibilities in oyster aquaculture. This was the first meeting the group has had since the storm and 30 members and guests were present. Hurricane Harvey Recovery Efforts, synopsis of major activities — Initial activities were in support of Palacios where I live, including the Pott of Palacios and Texas Marine Center, until the evacuation order was lifted for Calhoun County. Distributed Extension publications to multiple locations in Calhoun County including Magnolia Beach, Seadrift, Olivia, FEMA center, courthouse and Port Lavaca City Hall. Weekly conference calls with Texas Sea Grant. Daily reports written for AgriLife. Created and distributed 11 hurricane related newsletters. Identified and addressed need of commercial fisherman at Harbor of Refuge. With donated money, I was able to hire a crane and help with 5 vessels. (See Port Lavaca Wave story "The Miracle Boat".) Realized City of Port Lavaca needed additional help with their waterfront property issues, especially Nautical Landings Marina. Worked with General Land Office and boat owners to identify the 14 sunken vessels in the marina. Damage assessments of seafood linked businesses in Calhoun County. Worked to secure water sampling for private well owners that experienced flooding. Worked with Rusty Gaude from Louisiana Sea Grant to help City of Port Lavaca and Rockport. Attended 3 EOC meetings in Rockport and checked damages at shrimp farm in Taft. (Aransas County does not have a marine agent, thus Rusty and I helping out.) Surveyed erosion at Schicke Point, Alamo Beach, Magnolia Beach, and 6 -mile. Toured team from National Marine Fisheries Service around the county to talk with seafood dealers and bait shops in Port Lavaca, Indianola, Seadrift, and Port O'Connor. Multiple meetings, phone calls, and emails with partners, collaborators, and colleagues related to Harvey response and recovery efforts.
